10/27/97 R0N 12:53 FAX 3053474300 BURSONMARSTELLER Bursuan - Mlarstelleir Su~1Senti~el Sf7U7 H FLORIDA•FRIDAY•QCTORER 24, 199/ TOBACCO . 2 Philip Morris Cos. said it is planning to test its new smokeless tobacco system designed to reduce the odor and secondhand smoke of cigarettes. The low-tar cigarettes and accompanying lighters will be distributed to about 100 selected consumers in the Vnited States and Japan in.about a month, the company said. To use the device, smokers would insert a cigarette into the lighter, leaving only its filter tip exposed. The tobacco is heated inside the-lighter, and the only smoke that escapes is when someone sucks on the exposed tip, said Karen Daragan with Philip Morris. A pack of smokeless smokes would cost about $2.75, she said. John F. Banzbaf, executive director of Action on Smoking and.Health, said the smokeless cigarette is "deadly, deceptive, dumb and an act of desperation." He said his group will petition the FDA to hold 'it to the same standards as other medical delivery devices. ~1002 `
