AMERICAN SPIRIT NONFILTER KING SIZE (SP) AMERICAN SPIRIT KING SIZE (SP) AMERICAN SPIRIT MENTHOL KING SIZE (BOX) The Santa Fe Natural Tobacco Company, Santa Fe, NM is marketing American Spirit Nonfilter King Size Soft Pack, American Spirit King Size Soft Pack, and American Spirit Menthol King Size Box. According to a recent New York Times article (July 3, 1994 p.A3 1), American Spirit was originally introduced in 1985 as a cult cigarette, and reported sales of $10 million in 1993. American Spirit is said to contain "none of the additives found in conventional brands, like synthetic flavor enhancers, preservatives and burn accelerators; they do contain about 25 percent more tobacco than most other 85 millimeter brands". American Spirit smokers said the cigarettes were "healthier and less addictive because of the absence of additives; the higher tobacco content makes them more satisfying, so they crave fewer cigarettes and inhale less deeply". "Guaranteed 100% Additive-free Virginia tobacco and nothing else" appears on the Nonfilter and Menthol packs. The King Size Filter pack states, "Made from 100% Chemical - Additive-Free, Whole Leaf, Natural Virginia Tobacco and Nothing else". American Spirit does contain at least 25 percent more tobacco than thirty-five of the forty-two king size brands tested in the CI Program. American Spirit KS (SP) contains 24% and 26% more tobacco, respectively, than Marlboro KS and Winston KS. Despite claims of being additive and chemical free, the cigarette papers do contain 0.5 to 0.7% citrate, a bum accelerator. The pesticide/herbicide residue analysis identified the presence of the herbicides dicamba and 2,4,5 - T. Neither equaled or exceeded the maximum allowable USDA regulatory limits.i The granular material from the filter of American Spirit Menthol was examined by GC/MS and Infrared analysis. The material was identified as magnesium silicate, coated with a mixture of flavor components and a waxy substance, suggesting its function as a flavor transfer/release agent as well as for filtration purposes. The components identified were nearly identical to those obtained from a similar study done for cigarette filters from the brand USA.2 Natural menthol is used in American Spirit; it could not be determined if synthetic menthol was also present. In general, components specific to tobacco, packaging materials and filter were found in the mentholated and non-mentholated cigarettes. Several components were also identified in the non-mentholated cigarettes (acetophenone, toluic aldehyde, safranal, anethole and diosphenol) that are not native tobacco components, and their presence suggests that they are additives.3 1Reference memo from C. The non-mentholated products were considered good in overall mainstream smoke flavor, and the mentholated product was considered fair - poor in overall mainstream smoke flavor. The pack design, a combination of Southwestern and Art Deco motifs, features an American Indian smoking a peace pipe, with background colors of tan (KS Nonfilter), turquoise (KS Filter), and teal (KS Menthol). Natural food stores account for 15 percent of American Spirit sales. The products are also available in upscale wine store, gourmet food shops, herb stores and new-age boutiques. Four locations in Richmond distribute American Spirit. The current samples in this report were purchased in November from Price's Market, Richmond. Previous data from 1988 are provided for comparison. STAR TOBACCO CO. GUNSMOKE FULL FLAVOR KING SIZE & 100 (BOX) GUNSMOKE LIGHTS KING SIZE & 100 (BOX) GUNSMOKE LIGHTS MENTHOL 100 (BOX) VALENTINE LIGHTS KING SIZE & 100 (BOX) VALENTINE LIGHTS MENTHOL 100 (BOX) VEGAS MENTHOL KING SIZE (BOX) Star Tobacco Company, 16 South Market Street; 'Petersburg, VA (previously, the location of Brown & Williamson) is marketing Gunsmoke, Valentine, and Vegas cigarettes. Gunsmoke was test marketed on the West Coast in October, and "in six weeks sales soared to 10th place out of 157 brands offered in a national grocery store chain". Samuel P. Sears, CEO of Star was quoted as saying, "Now we're gunning for the national market with a full line of high-quality natural tasting premium priced cigarettes". Gunsmoke is being promoted through special appearances by the Gunsmoke Man and Woman, and the use of Gunsmoke vans throughout the country. The packaging reflects the "look and feel of the old west", with the Gunsmoke Man and Woman appearing separately on red or white packs and cartons. These products are distributed through a network of major and sub distributors and are available nationwide. Cigarettes purchased in Virginia were priced one dollar per carton less than Doral and Cambridge. ~~ According to a Star Tobacco news release, Gunsmoke contains high quality 100% natural tobaccos with no fillers or reconstituted tobacco". Samples of Gunsmoke, Valentine, and Vegas, purchased in Virginia, during November were analyzed and found to contain 10 to 19% reconstituted tobacco. The reconstituted tobacco was higher in stem content and had larger particle size than typical domestic reconstituted tobacco. Further investigation of this material has been initiated. No information was available concerning marketing or promotional activities for Valentine or Vegas. The Valentine pack is white with red lips (copyright of the Marilyn Monroe estate). REYNOLDS SALEM LIGHTS MENTHOL 100 (SP) A reduction in reconstituted tobacco (25 to 15%) and an increase in expanded stems (2 to 10%) were observed for Salem Lights Menthol 100 cigarettes. No other changes were noted in smoke deliveries or cigarette construction. R. J. REYNOLDS SALEM SLIM LIGHTS MENTHOL 100 (BOX) A reduction in reconstituted tobacco (25 to 11%) and the addition of expanded stems (9%) were observed for Salem Slim Lights Menthol 100 cigarettes. REYNOLDS WINSTON LIGHTS 100 (SP) A reduction in reconstituted tobacco (25 to 17%) and the addition of expanded stems (9%) were observed for Winston Lights 100 cigarettes. Higher filter ventilation (24 to 32%) was also noted. R. J. REYNOLDS MONARCH FULL FLAVOR MENTHOL KING SIZE (SP) An increase in expanded stems (11 to 17%) and a decrease in expanded tobacco (33 to 27%) were observed for Monarch Full Flavor Menthol King Size cigarettes. Lower total alkaloids (1.65 to 1.38 % (DWB)) were also noted. BROWN & WILLIAMSON KOOL MENTHOL KING SIZE S(~P An increase in expanded tobacco (11 to 16%) was observed for Kool Menthol King Size cigarettes.
