"B.A.T. PLC Up on Philip Morris Q2 Figures"

In London, shares in B.A.T PLC grew strong after trading lower
throughout the morning session due in part to Philip Morris's.
19.3 percent Q2 earnings. "They were a pretty good set of
figures and have certainly given B.A.T a lift," said one analyst.
Philip Morris reported earnings of $1.42 a share, with net income
rising to $1.2 billion, up 17.6 percent in the quarter.

In Zagreb, Croatia, tobacco manufacturer Tvornica Duhana Rovinj
this week began production of Marlboro cigarettes under license,
according to director Anton Cerin. Philip Morris Cos, is the first inter-
national tobacco firm to give a production license to a Croatian
cigarette maker, said company executive Marco Terribillini. Tvornica
Duhana Rovinj's factory, located close to Italy in the northern Istrian
peninsula, produces Walter Wolf and Ronhill, Croatia's best known
brands.

Marion Merrill Dow has launched its smoking cessation product,
Nicorette 2 mg, in Japan. Dow said pharmaceutical wholesalers
began stocking the product in June, and this month Nicorette has
become available to physicians throughout Japan. According to
Dow, Nicorette is the first nicotine replacement therapy aid in Japan.
Dow said it is estimated that between 3 million and 5 million of
Japan's 30 million smokers have smoking-related disorders.

The United States has for many years been busy trying to market
American cigarette brands to countries in Asia. During the 1980s,
the United States Trade Representative's office worked vigorously to
ensure access for U.S. tobacco firms in Asian countries, which
usually limited their markets to government-owned cigarette
monopolies. The free traders' rationale was that if a U.S. trading
partner allowed domestic sales of cigarettes, then American tobacco
companies should be allowed to compete. So far it has been profit-
able; exports by U.S. tobacco firms cut the nation's trade deficit over
$4 billion annually. The U.S. tobacco invasion has been keenly felt

cigarette brands, smoking among male teenagers rose from 18
percent to 30 percent, and rose among female teenagers from 2
percent to 9 percent.
"Kuwaiti Proposal Would Ban Smoking In Public"

A legislative proposal would ban smoking in any public place, punish-
able by a US$100 fine. Surveys show Kuwaitis have been smoking
more since the 1990-91 occupation by Iraq.
