that cause changes in testicular fvrction in several

Tile data presented by Levine et al. illustrate once
again how many factors influence human spermato-
genesis and how it is possible to detect at least some of
them in well-controlled studies that explore potential-
ly confounding variables. Careful clinical studies such
as this one, together with studies of the intratesticular
mechanisms of spermatogenesis, will provide us with
the information needed to increase fertility in men
with impaired spermatogenesis and decrease fertility
in men who desire contraception.

NEW "INFORMATION FOR AUTHORS" -
AND READERS
IN this issue we publish a revised "Information for
Authors" page, including three changes that should
interest readers as well as authors.
First, we are adopting a new, structured format for
abstracts. fournal abstracts will henceforth consist of
four paragraphs labeled Background, Methods, Re-
sults, and Conclusions. Sometimes, when appropriate,
two of the first three paragraphs will be combined in
one. The object is to enable readers to grasp the es-
sence of an article quickly by providing a framework
that will present the work in a logical, complete, yet
concise fashion. For many years we have been advis-
ing authors to organize their abstracts with this quad-
ripartite structure in mind. The new paragraph head-
ings simply make the structure more explicit and, we
hope, the abstract more inlbrmative.
Second, we are asking that the letter of submission
be signed by all authors, not just the corresponding
author, and that it affirm not only that all authors
have seen and approved the final manuscript but that
they "have taken due care to ensure the integrity
of the work." The latter requirement is meant to
establish that all the authors are sufficiently familiar
with the conduct of the research to warrant their
public endorsement of it. We have taken this step
because we believe that responsibility for the integrity
of scientific research is a duty of all who wish
to clailn credit for authorship. Furthermore, we be-
lieve that greater awareness and acknowledgment
of this responsibility will encourage coauthors to
pay closer attention to the overall integrity of the
work with which they are involved, thereby decreasing
the likelihood of misconduct. When collaborating
colleagues stay in close touch with each other there
is much less chance that one of them can engage in
mischief.
Finally, our Information for Authors includes a new
stipulation that authors of review articles and editori-
als should have no financial association with a compa-
ny whose product figures prominently in the article or
with a company making a competitive product. Until
now, our conflict-of-interest policy did not distinguish
between research and review articles, and required
only that authors disclose their financial ties. We be-
lieve that this policy is adequate for research articles
(although many institutions are beginning to pro-
scribe certain kinds of financial arrangements involv-
ing their research staffs), because these articles pro-
vide data that readers can interpret for themselves.
We have come to believe, however, that a stronger rule
is necessary for review articles and editorials. In these
articles authors use their own judgment in citing and
interpreting the literature, and readers must thus rely
on the objectivity of the author. When authors have a
financial as well as a scientific interest in their sub-
jects, questions inevitably arise that cast doubt on this
presumption of objectivity. It is a problem that should
and can be avoided by selecting authors who have
no financial stake in the subjects they write about.
We recognize that in some fields this policy will ex-
clude many leading experts of unquestioned integrity.
We regret that fact but regard the policy as necessary
to support the reader's trust in these types of ar-
ticles.
As always, we welcome comments from our readers
on the new editorial rules.
