Dear Dr. Lindzen:
Recently you spoke with an associate of mine, Sheri Kesser, who
informed you of my efforts to create a coalition of scientists, business leaders,
industrialists and others concerned about the advancement of sound science.
The name of this coalition is The Advancement of Sound Science Coalition
(TASSC), and its mission is to advance the principles of science used to
formulate public policy.
As a scientist, I know you agree with me that there is a need to
advance sound science in the public arena. Too often studies based on
unsound scientific principles have been used to drive the public policy process,
which in turn has resulted in unforeseen negative consequences. However, we
also know that quality science has been the basis for public policy decisions
which have vastly improved our quality of life.
As an economist at New Mexico State University, I have been involved
in research. I also have been a part of the business and public policy arenas.
Based on my experience, I believe that good science has not been used
consistently to formulate public policy decisions. I have always advocated the
need for greater use of good science in government policy; and I believe that
sound scientists should have an important voice in public policy.
It is this need to promote the principles of science in public policy that
prompts me to write this letter and ask you to join TASSC. With your help,
TASSC will be able to take specific measures towards our goal. As indicated
in the enclosed description of TASSC, we want to establish a set of principles
to help guide the use of good science in public policy. We want to educate
Americans as to what constitutes the appropriate use of science in public
policy. Finally, we want to serve as a forum for your views about the use of
science in the public policy process and provide you with a means to help
bridge the gap between science and policy makers.

I know we are in agreement as to the advancement of sound science in
public policy. Therefore, I urge you to join TASSC, so that we can ensure the
use of sound science in public policy today, and a better quality of life for all
in the future. Please complete the enclosed Statement of Support, and let me
know that I can count on your assistance.
I look forward to working with you on this effort in the near future.
Sincerely,
Garrey Carruthers
