Biography
John Patrick Pierce, PhD
Head, Cancer Prevention and Control
University of California San Diego Cancer Center
John Patrick Pierce, PhD, is Head, Cancer Prevention and Control at the University of
Califomia San Diego (UCSD) Cancer Center. He is also the Manager, Biostatistics Shared
Resource and Associate Professor, Department of Preventive and Family Medicine at the
center. Prior to his current posts he was the Chief, Epidemiology Branch, Office on Smoking
and Health, Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention in Rockville, MD.
Dr. Pierce has 15 years teaching experience at various universities. On the graduate level
some of the courses he has taught include cancer cause and prevention, drug and alcohol use,
and applied epidemiology. On the undergraduate level he has taught health care systems,
biostatistics, preventive medicine and epidemiology.
Since 1990 he has been a member of the Evaluation Advisory Committee for Tobacco-Tax
Initiative for the California Department of Health Services; Member, San Diego County
Tobacco Control Coalition and a consultant to the Office on Smoking and Health, Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention among numerous others.
Some of his recent review activities are protocol reviews for the American Lung Association
of California, Rescarch Committee and Study Section on Nutrition and Lifestyle, Alternative
Medicine RFA, National Institutes of Health. He has completed journal reviews for JAMA,
Tobacco Control and Cancer Prevention, Biomarkers and Control as well as others. Last
year he was awarded the University of California/Health Net Wellness Award.
