ASONS TO THROW
ACCO OUT OF SPORTS
1. Cigarette companies associate smoking with healthy activities to place doubt in children's
minds about the unhealthy effects of smoking.
2. Cigarette companies sponsor sporting events to create the illusion in children's minds that
their favorite athletes endorse, play for, and use cigarettes.
3. Philip Morris, through its Virginia,Slims brand, sponsors women's tennis to deceive
children about the unhealthy consequences of smoking.
4. Philip Morris places Marlboro billboards in Shea and Yankee stadiums to tell children
that being an athlete goes hand in hand with being a Marlboro Man. =
5. Cigarette companies buy respectability by associating smoking with sports,.
6. Cigarette companies place billboards in sports stadiums that appear in the most frequently
televised camera angles. This circumvents federal law which prohibits cigarette advertising
on television. The Marlboro logo appeared almost 6,000 times in the recently televised
Marlboro Grand Prix auto race.
7. Cigarette companies place ads in sports facilities because sporting events draw a large
audience of young people.
8. Cigarette companies use sporting events to target youngsters because individual athletes
refuse to.push cigarettes on children.
9. A giant billboard advertisement for a cancer-causing, addictive drug should not be the
backdrop upon which this nation's greatest sports heroes perform.
~
10. The Olympic Committee prohibits tobacco billboards in Olympic sports stadiums.
Minnesota and Utah have rejected cigarette ads in their athletic stadiums. Dodger Stadium
and Wrigley Field are tobacco billboard-free. 37 states do not allow Virginia Slims tennis.
