MD 20827-2210 Facsimile 301 571 9147 Price Waterhous'e LLP May 10, 1995 New York City Restaurant Survey EXECUTIVE SUMMARY • 0 The survey was sponsored by the New York Tavern and Restaurant Association and was conducted from April 28th to May 5th, 1995 by the Price Waterhouse LLP Survey Research Center. Randomly selected restaurants from the five boroughs of New York City were called and asked to participate in a survey designed to assess the impact, if any, of the new smoking regulation on New York City Restaurants. The study resulted in 209 completed interviews out of a total of 378 eligible restaurants for a response rate of 55 %. For questions where all respondents provided information, the margin of error is t7% at the 95% confidence level. The following are highlights from the survey results:  55% of the respondents indicated that they opposed the new law restricting smoking in restaurants, 33% said they favored it, 11 % had no opinion, and 1 % indicated that they did not know.  51 % of the respondents indicated that the new law had been bad for business, 9% said that the law had been good for business, 38% said the law has had no effect, and 2% indicated that they did not know.  When asked if gross sales receipts since April 10th, 1995 were higher, lower, or about the same as gross sales receipts for the same time last year, 41 % of the respondents indicated that their sales were. lower, 9% said their sales were higher, 34% said their sales were about the same, and 16% did not know or refused to answer the question.  Of the respondents who indicated'tP1at their gross sales receipts were lower than for the same period last year, 83% said that they were more than 5% lower and 52% said that they were more than 15% lower.
