FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 20, 1994
WISCONSIN GOVERNOR TOMMY THOMPSON
JOINS WLF LEGAL POLICY ADVISORY BOARD
The Washington Legal Foundation (WLF) is pleased to announce that Governor
Tommy Thompson of the State of Wisconsin has joined WLF's Legal Policy Advisory
Board.
Tommy Thompson was elected Governor of Wisconsin in 1986 and was reelected in
1990 with 58 % of the vote. As Governor, he has cut the income and capital gains taxes
and repealed the inheritance tax; he has instituted and spotlighted school choice and
"learnfare" to penalize welfare families whose children skip school. Wisconsin became
the only state in 1990 in which welfare rolls dropped, from 300,000 in 1987 to 238,000
in 1990.
Prior to his election as Governor, Tommy Thompson served in the Wisconsin
Assembly from 1966 to 1986, and was the Minority Floor Leader 1981-86 and the the
Assistant Minority Leader 1973-81. He also served as Chairman of the Republican
Governors Association from 1991 to 1992.
Governor Thompson's impressive credentials and commitment to the free enterprise
system will make him a valuable asset to WLF's Legal Policy Advisory Board. The
Legal Policy Advisory Board, consisting of over fifty distinguished pro-free enterprise
legal scholars, law school deans, practitioners, and business leaders, advises WLF on
how to best respond to the needs of legal educators and decision-makers through its
activities and publications. It also provides a publishing forum for scholars and other
professionals concerned with legal policy issues affecting the free enterprise system.
WLF is a national public interest law and policy center dedicated to promoting the
free-enterprise system. WLF promotes its mission through precedent-setting litigation
and the public policy research and publications of its Legal Studies Division.
