ARCHBISHOP'S OFFICE 1011 FIRST AVENVE NEW YoRK. NY 10022 April 12, 1984 Dear Friends of Saint Vincent's, This being my first opportunity to address the Family of Saint Vincent's Hospital and Medical Center, I would like to extend my warmest greetings to you all. I know that there are so many of you who have contributed much to Saint Vincent's that it is my privilege to take this opportunity to thank you all for your generosity and love. Your participation in this evening's benefit perform- ance of The American Ballet Theatre is greatly appreciated. Your generous support will assist this institution in providing essen- tial health care services to the people of the Archdiocese of New York. Let us pray together that this great Catholic hospital will continue its participation in the mission of the Catholic Church through the ministry of healing with particular concern for the poor, the aged and the dying. Sincerely, A hbishop' of New York 3 T_

St. Vincent's Hospital and Medical Center of New York A Tradition of Excellence St. Vincent's Hospital and Medical Center is one of New York's oldest and largest voluntary hospitals. Founded by the Sisters of Charity in 1849, the hospital was originally located in a converted boys' academy on East 13th Street. It moved to Greenwich Village in 1856 and has been there ever since. In the past 135 years, St. Vincent's has grown from a 30-bed charity hospital supervised by five doctors to an 813-bed medical center staffed by several hundred specialists. Determined to maintain its leadership in the health care field, St. Vincent's is currently involved in the most exciting facilities renewal project in its long history. Stage one was completed with the opening of the John A. Coleman Pavilion in 1983. This ultramodern 16-story facility houses 326 inpatient beds, new laboratories, operating suites, medical, surgical, and neonatal intensive care units, a greatly expanded emergency room, and a host of other support and specialty units. Stage two, which is now underway, will include the extensive remodeling of four buildings in the St. Vincent's complex and the construction of the George E. Link, Jr. Medical Sciences Building. Complementing the Coleman Pavil- ion, this new structure will offer expanded laboratory, radiology, operating and emergency room facilities. When the second stage of the facilities renewal project is completed some two years hence, St. Vincent's will have the distinction of being the first all new medical center in Manhattan of this decade. St. Vincent's is proud of its growth and accomplishments, but the hospital's proudest boast is its continuing tradition of medical excellence and its unswerving commitment to the mission of its 19th century founders-caring for the sick with compassion and skill. 5
