APPENDIX 6 TO PROTOCOL P 0500/3203 "270893 PAGE 1 Appendix 6 Controlled Smoking Procedure Different individuals tend to smoke the same types of cigarettes very differently. For example, one person may take many deep puffs at short intervals, while another may take a few shallow puffs at long intervals. Furthermore, individuals might modify how they smoke depending, among other reasons, on the subjective charac- teristics of the cigarette that he is smoking. The controlled smoking procedure was developed to minimize these inter- and in- traindividual sources of variability by having the experimenter control the subjects' smoking behavior. In the procedure, the experimenter specifies how many puffs are to be taken, when to puff, and how to inhale and exhale the cigarette smoke. In this study, the subjects will be given the following instruc- tion: "In this experiment, you will take a total of 7 puffs on the cigarette. Light the cigarette now, but do not inhale the lighting puff. On my signal inhale each puff deeply, hold in the smoke for 2 s and exhale. Wait for the next signal." The interpuff interval will be fixed at 30 s. ~ Within the study, the number of puffs taken on each of the test cigarettes will be the same.
