.-EC-15-93. tJED 1''2:56. ,: ]UL3.oNIdELLS- A. JUDSOrd WELLS .1 wiNOEer+taE -n. KENNETT SOUARE. PENNSYLVANIA 193a9 PIoNE 2i5-3281045 Rod Jackson, Acting NeM Department o.-: Episemi~ology' School of Medicine University of Auckland Fax 64-9-373-7503' Dear Dr. Jackson, 8 September, 1'993 Stan Glantz kindly sent along to me a copy of Chapter 6 of your 1989 thesis since he thought it would be a help to me in writing a review of passive smoking and heart disease that I am doing for the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. As usual I have some questions about it and hoped that you could help me out. If you can repLy by fax, my fax machime is connerted'to the same phone number as above. First, has the work been published in..any journal, i.e.,., the passive smoking/heart part? I assume that M1 means myocardial i.nfarction cases, MIC means controls for MI, CD ne=s cardiac death cases, and CDC means controls for CD. if I'm wrong, please advise. Is any update with more data available? I had some trouble trying,to reconcile Table 1 with Table 6.3'. Specifically, when I calculate odds ratios from-table 6.1, 1 get 1.2 instead of 1.5 and 3.17 instead of 2.7 in the first column; 2.88 vs. 2.4, 1.37 vs. 0.9'and 3.6 vs. 4.4 in the third column; and for the lower end of the confidence interval at the top of the second-column I get 0.06 vs. 0.96. Which table is correct?, and if there are errors in Table 6.3', do they carry over into, any of the later tables? I note that you adjusted for age and social class in Table 6.4,. These are the odds ratios that I probably will use in my paper. Did you.by any chance try to adjust for any of the other heart risk factors?' I know you state that the other risk factors dMnot affect the active smoking relative risks, buc it is possible that one or more of thew may have affected the passive smoking risks. Thanks for the help. I am in the process of answetimg reviewe.rss comments so am.about ready to go to press so a'-prompt responsew.ould be a great help. Give my best regardss to Beaglehole.
