(1) -SCIENTIFIC BRIEFINGS MEDIA WORK : S&T presentations were
given to a group from! Finland!, representing the government,
the hotel and food industries and~ the trade unions, and to the
Sales Director of Intertaba.
(2)-EXTRAMURAL PROJECTS, PRIMARILY IAQ EXPERIMENTAL WORK -
PRESENT STATUS :
- IMPERIAL COLLEGE, LONDON - IAQ IN UK OFFICES - OBJECTIVE :
TO SUPPLEMENT'THE BASIC RESULTS OF THE "PERRY STUDY" WITH SOME
MORE DETAILED AND REFINED INVESTIGATIONS (e.g,. THE TIMEWISE
CHANGE' IN IAQ). STATUS : The measurements for the summer
period are now finished and are being evaluated. The
measurements for the winter period are currently being made.
The whole operation is not facilitated by the fact that
Imperial College, as a whole, was declared non-smoking as of
October and Prof. PERRY's department had~ to apply for a
special permit.
- FRESENIUS - METHODS FOR IAQ MEASUREMENT - OBJECTIVE : TO
DEVELOP EQUIPMENT (NON-OBTRUSIVE AND LABORATORY TYPE), AND
METHODS TO MEASURE A WIDE VARIETY OF IAQ PARAMETERS. STATUS :
The following work remains to be done on the portable
samplers: (1) a thorough check of all functions, (2)
production of technical manuals, and (3) an official
certificate showing that they can be used aboard airplanes
without creating electromagnetic interference.
- NEURATH - VENTILATION REGIMES - OBJECTIVE : TO STUDY' HOW IAQ
IS INFLUENCED BY DIFFERENT TYPES OF VENTILATION, AND THEIR
CONCOMITANT EFFICACIES. STATUS : The achievements of this
project were discussed with Dr. NEURATH during his visit to
S&T. According to the contract the project'continues into
1992, but it is currently under review.

- INBIFO - HUMAN CONTRIBUTIONS TO STALE AIR - OBJECTIVE : TO
RELATE STALENESS OF AIR TO HUMAN METABOLIC COMPOUNDS.
STATUS : The human metabolic pathway for the production of
dimethyl sulfone does not seem to have been published. A
publication is now planned on the existing results from this
project.
- SCHNEIDER - COMPARING RISK FACTORS IN THE MODERN ENVIRONMENT'
- OBJECTIVE : TO INVESTIGATE' AND ANALYSE MATHEMATICAL MODELS
FOR RISK ASSESSMENT' UNDER COMPETING RISK FACTORS AND
CONFOUNDING CONDITIONS. STATUS : A proposal for changes in
the computer programme has beeni sent to Prof SCHNEIDER for
implementation,. The next discussion is foreseen for January
1992.
- FRESENIUS - NICOTINE AND RELATED ALKALOIDS IN FOOD -
OBJECTIVE: TO CHECK A VARIETY OF WIDELY USED FOOD AND SPICES
FOR THE' PRESENCE OF' NICOTINE, NORNICOTINE, ANABASINE' AND
COTININE, AND TO DETERMINE THE AMOUNTS QUANTITATIVELY.
STATUS' : The final report on all spices, teas and vegetables
tested is still pending.
- LEE / GARDINER - AVIAN CONTACTS AND RELATED DISEASES -
OBJECTIVE : TO DEVELOP QUESTIONNAIRES AND CARRY OUT INTERVIEWS
TO OBTAIN INFORMATION ON THE INFLUENCE' OF CONTACTS WITH PET
BIRDS IN THE' DEVELOPMENT OF LUNG DISEASES. STATUS : The
final report is still pending.
- WEETMAN - REVIEW OF ASSUMPTIONS MADE BY TECHNICAL COMMITTEES
WHEN DECIDING ON 'SAFE' EXPOSURE LEVELS - OBJECTIVE : TO
IDENTIFY THE SETS OF ASSUMPTIONS USED BY VARIOUS TECHNICAL
COMMITTEES IN SETTING 'SAFE' LEVELS OF EXPOSURE TO PUTATIVE
INDUSTRIAL HAZARDS. STATUS . No new developments to be
reported.
- TNO - ODOUR TRAPPING BY MEMBRANE FILTRATION - OBJECTIVE : TO
REMOVE' GASEOUS •TOBACCO SMOKE COMPONENTS EFFECTIVELY' FROM A
SMOKE-LADEN ROOM. STATUS . The final report on the

optimisation of the technical parameters, and the hardware
used for filtration, showed extremely promising results.

MATERIAL - FTR1025 Patent No. 00 57 979. The R&D Process
Development Department has decided to abandon this case by not
paying the renewal/maintenance fees for this case.
CIGARETTE PACKET WITH ROUNDED EDGES AND CONVENTIONAL LID -
FTR0069 U.S. Design Patent Application No. 07/095,243. We
have received an Issue Notification from the United States
Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) stating that this design
application will be issued in December 1991 as U.S. Patent No.
Des. 322,687.
DISPLAY PACK - FTR0087 U.S. Design Patent Application No.
07/363,944. The USPTO has granted this Design Patent
Application and has issued it under the No. 321,134.
CONCENTRIC FILTER CIGAR:ETTE - FTR0091 U.S. Patent Application
No. 07/508,933. Fish and Neave (~F&N) has filed the Response
to the final Examiner's Action in the USPTO. Finnish Patent
Application No. 90 1884. Our associates will reply to the
official letter which asked for the results of searches in
other countries. Norwegian Patent Application No. 89 1988.
We have accepted the amendments proposed by the Examiner and
the application should now proceed to acceptance and grant.

FTR0099 U.S Patent Application No. 07/580,311. The draft
response to the Examiner's Action has been reviewed and F&N
has been instructed to file the same in the USPTO.
Australian Patent Application No. 62354/90 Our associate in
Australia has filed a request in the Patent Office for an
examination of this application.
BACTERIAL CONTROL OF CIGARETTE BEETLES - FTRO100 New Patent
Application in Turkey. This new application was filed
claiming priority from the U.K. application.

U.S. Patent Application No. 07/743,121. We have received the
Notice of Recordation stating that the assignment has been
recorded by the Assignment Division of the USPTO.
DEVICE FOR CHECKING A STREAM OF TOBACCO BEFORE TRIMMING -
FTR0108 U.S. Patent Application No. 717,937. The draft of
the response to the first Office Action was approved and sent
to F&N for filing im the USPTO.
TRIPLE TUBE-IN-TOW FILTER - FTRO110 New U.S. Patent
Application. The USTPO has issued a Filing Receipt stating
that this application has been assigned Serial No. 07/767,157,
andalso a Notice of Recordation of Assignment document. The
Information Disclosure Statement has been filed in connection
with this case disclosing the references to the USPTO.
FLAT CARTON I and II - FTR0114 U.K. Registered Design
Application Nos. 201 1065 and 201 1066. We have received
further objections from the Design Registry and we are
preparing the answer in time for the due date.

Application No. 553/91-0. The European Patent Office has
issued the International Search Report. All the references are
merely regarded as technical background.

PROCESS AND DEVICE FOR PREPARING BLANKS - FTRO122 Swiss Patent
Application No. 1468/91-3. We have received' the result of
the International Search Report. All references are merely
regarded~as technical background.
GRASPING AND TRANSFER DEVICE - FTRO123. New U.S. Patent
Application. The USPTO has issued a Filing Receipt and
assigned the serial number 07/777,732 to our application.
PROCESS AND DEVICE FOR SUPPLYING A MACHINE WITH CIGARETTES.
New Swiss Patent Application. The Swiss Patent Office has
issued a Filing Receipt and assigned! the Application No.
3081/91-0.
BAT SWISS PATENT'NO. 664.876 - BAT EXTRA SLIM CIGARETTES. We
have received the preliminary decision from the Geneva Court
of Justice of 25th October, 1991. The court simply copied all
questions submitted to the experts by FTR and BAT.
Furthermore, in accordance with: what we had! asked, the court
ordered the experts to hear both parties after they have
responded to the questions. The next hearing was fixed for
15th May, 1992.
PAYNES' EUROPEAN PATENT No. 0121371. SUPASTRIP, SELF
ADHESIVE TEAR TAPE. Paynes of Nottingham~ has informed us

that we may be infringing their patent if we use
pressure-sensitive tear tape from any source other than Paynes
or its European licencee (Tann). In collaboration with our
associate in the U.K. we are examining the present situation.
POTENTIAL LICENCE AGREEMENT WITH F0CKE' - FTR European Patent.
Application No.354 873. our associates in Germany have g,ivem
us their comments on whether there is a possible infringement
of BAT German Patent No. 3718'601 with this case. The same were
forwarded to the Development and Technical Department of FTR
for the final decision.
(4)-WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS :
Tuesday, 3rd' : PIC / ANB - A presentation was given to Mr.
ZACCHEO, the new Sales Director of INTERTABA (Bologna, Italy),
on the activity of Science & Technology. After discussions,
he was shown the video "Why People Smoke"',, as
well as an
excerpt fromi a Swiss TV newscast relating the atmospheric
pollution to the lung cancer rate in Europe.
Wednesday, 4th : HER - We received a report oni the regional
WHO meeting on "Public Health in the Year 2000", which was
held in Kiel, Germany between 18th and 21st November, 1991.
The purpose of this conference was to analyse existing models
of public health; to define the functions and tasks of public
health and to develop public health at national and
international levels. The topic of the same conference for
1992 will be "'Cost and Efficiency of Public H'ealth". The
information we received' came from one of the participants at
the meeting. PEM - At the request of C. LISTER, C&B, met
with him and Prof. NILSEN, (University of Trondheim) in Basle
to discuss the current status and future plans for the project
involving hair nicotine measurements.

b)-Important Aspects of Air Quality, c)-The Technology of
Ventilation~, d') Practical Solutions, e)-General Discussions..
Thursday, 12th : HGA / HER / IAM : Co-ordination meeting on
programmes concerning long-standing S&T objectives and their
integration with~ the prime objectives of the two~ European
regions for 1992, ie. 1) taxation and tariffs, and~ 2) freed'om
of advertising and promotion. The participants were
Messrs. A. ANDRADE (LEGAL), J.-B. BODER (R&D), U. CRETTAZ
(FTR), G. DISERENS (EEMA),, W. FINK (R&D)., M. HORST (EEC)', R.
MAY (EEC), R. PANTET (FTR) and K. WARE (EEC),. Messrs. S.
CARLSON and P. GRANDJEAN (CA EEMA) had a last-minute
conflicting commitment and! sent an apology. The next meetingg
will be held on 22nd January, 1992, in Lausanne. PEM -
Attended the meeting: of the Scientific Committee of TAC with
the ISCSH. The principal topics discussed were the future of
the research programme of the Tobacco Products Research, Trust
(TPRT), and a list of permitted additives for the UK in light
of the EC harmonisation. After reviewing the state of the
research, programmes Sir PETER FROGGATT stated that although
the ISCSH will cease to exist at the end of this year, further
TPRT grants may be awarded, and would be adtninistered by those
continuing with the TPRT' (certainly Prof. D. POSWILLO and Ms.
C. SWANN). Sufficient money had been, put aside to cover
either a monograph, or a conference, summarising the TPRT
programme on its completion, and he felt that either the

Monday, 16th : HGA - Meeting, in London with Messrs. ANDRADE,
PECK and NEWSOMi (SH&B), on coordinating on,going contacts with
scientists throughout Europe. Second meeting with Mr.
LISTER, (C&B), to discuss the progress of the ETS research and
consultants projects. Third meeting with Messrs. PALIN' and
REDFERN on various communication projects. HER - Meeting
with, Drs. LAZAR HERZFELD and WALTER STOECKLIN of Herzfeld
Laboratories, Basle, Switzerland~. Dr. HERZFELD is well-known
in Europe for the development of the "Herzfeld Index'"' for
cigarette deliveries. He tried to compress several
parameters (tar, nicotine, gas phase components) into a single
figure which was then used for cigarette ranking. The two
gentlemen reported on their progress in establishing a
standard method for a complete chemical characterisation of
liquorice.
inTednesday, 18th : PIC - Meeting at CERIA with Prof. J. LENGES,
Director of the "Station d'Essais", his assistant, Ms. L.
DEWEGHE, and Ms. I. VANDERPUTTEN, a co-worker. The aim of
the visit was to discuss the results of the preliminary study
of the air quality in Belgian railway carriages. They were
also informed~ that it had been decided not to pursue this
project_
Thursday, 19th . HGA / HER - Hosted Dr. GEORG NEURATH to
discuss the ongoing project. He presented a report on the
last three years of contractual research in the field of ETS
and improvement of ventilation. All his experiments were
done in a highly efficient laminar flow chamber with
remote-controllied on-line instrumentation,, and he provid'ed' a
draft version of a progress report.
