TC126/WG6 N58 '. RESPONSE TO AUBORT The essential argument of the paper by Aubort and Etournaud is that smokers of BARCLAY obtain more smoke than smokers of other brands of nominally 1mg delivery. This is basediupon a.technique of sampling from the mouthsof smokers immediately following a puff. Aubort's mouth sampling experiments were undertakeni without the benefit of knowingihow smoke is actually dispersed'in the human mouth. As has a7ready been described in the Introduction, there are major diifferencess in the smoke dispersion between BARCLAY and conventionally ventilated cigarettes. These in vitro differences have been confirmed in vivo by Dr Louis Fine using fibre optic viewing. Video tapes of this are available. There are several fundamental errors in the approach adopted by Aubort andlthese are set out in some detail initwo critiques (N59 and N60).. Atnong the objections to the Aubort mouth-sampling technique is the failure to appreciate the crucial importance of sampling position. It is also important to note that Dr Aubort does not differentiate between cigarettes with a nominal delivery of 7-16 mg tar. Experiments performed inde~pendentlyby,TNA1,Apelidoorn (N61), show thatt sampling position critically affects estimated tar intakes. The data is shown by anialternative graphical presentation (N62). Aubort's laboratory experiments cannot represent everyday smoking, dependingias they do on interventi'onwith the~subject.
