TC126/WC6 N52 THE KAMM-FINE HOLDER The question of the validity of standard cigarette holders has been raised even to the extentof a proposal specifically, and uniquely, biased against filters with peripheral air channels (the Philip Morri's/Copeland holder). Brown and Williamson asked Dr Roger Kamm, a biophysici'st at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Dr Louis Fine„ a,maxillofacial surgeon at the University of Chicagp~to design a holder more representative of human lips. Dr Kamm~s paper (N53) describes the pressures exertediby human lips in smoking. The holder,, patented byArs Fine and Kamm jN54), simulates effects of lip pressure and lip drape. Measurements performediat TNO using this. holder (N55)' show that at normall human lip pressures and insertion depths BARCLAY delivers 1mg tar. At extreme pressure and short insertion depths (not.normally fownd'ih human smoking), tar increases to 3mg. The depth of insertion of a cigarette between the 1ips is one way .whereby a smoker may, consciously or unconsciously, influence the degree of ventilation of any ventilated cigarette,. Using altechniique developed and published by BATCigarettenfabriken GmbH, Hamburg (N56), this aspect of smokers' behaviour has been the subj~ect of surveys, the results of which will be presented. A large study conductedby a consumer orgainisation in Switzerland shows quite cllearlly that depth of insertion is important andivaries with cigarette type (N157).
