Presidential Cigarettes
DYATE:
April 13, 1988
At 9:40 this morning I received a telephone call from Cliff
Sharrock, the individual in the White House who maintains the
inventory of cigarettes which the manufacturers provide in,
special packages. Cliff called'to advise me formally that,
effective immediately, all cigarettes will be removed from the
White House, the~White House Staff Miess, Camp David, Air Force
One, Army One and Marine One (the Presidential helicopters)1,
and any of th~e back-upiplanes from the Presidential aircraft
fleet. However, while cigarette products are being removed,
smoking will continue to be permittedl iln the aforementionedd
locations and aircraft.
This actionihas been coming for at least two years. The final
action onithis matter was the result of efforts by White House
physician John E. Hutton who prevailed on the First Lady too
convince the President that smoking should not be tacitly
endorsed by having cigarette products readily available in the
various Presidential facilities.
You will recall tha~t cigarette prodiucts were banned from the
White House diuring the Carter Administration.and were returned
only following the Reagan election. Should George Bush prevail
this fall it is highly unlikely that cigarettes will be
readmitted; Mrs. Bush is a strong opponent of smoking.
