Economists, policy analysts, journalist's,, and leading, scientists from the United States and
Europe, willl meet in Washington, D.C., in late May to take a critical look at the role of science
ini the development of health and environmentall policy. You are cordially invited to attend.
"Scientific Integrity in the Public Policy Process;'"' a conference jointly sponsored by
The L*tternational Institute of George Mason University and' the Washinoton-based Scien: e&
Environmental Policy Project, will be held on May,24-25at the Madison Hbtel.
Among the debating points:
The use and misuse of scientific data~ in relation to radon, asbestos,, global warnuing,
ozone depletion, passive smoking, pesticides,, genetically engineered products, the
Delaney Amendment, and a number of other issues.
The problem of assessing risk in the face of scientific uncertainty.
The economic impact of nont-science-based regulation.
Scientifiic responsibility--to the profession and to the public.
The program~ will also feature a timely address by Peter Huber, author of Galileo's
Revenge: Junk Science in the Courtroom (an issue now before the Supreme Court), and! a debate
on~ the quality of environmental reporting, by journalists from some of the nat2on"s leading
newspapers and newsmagazines.
TThis conference marks a turning point~ as ratiornal decision making, based on sound,
scientific research; begins to make knroads on irrational activism. We hope you wild join us for
