~ ~ LAA ~~. Sto :esWAsr 6" CITYLINE THANK YOU FOR OBSERVING SAN DIEGO'S NEW NO SM ORDINANCE Because smoking has been proven dangerous to the health not only of smokers but to those exposed to "second-hand smoke" in enclosed areas, the City of San Diego has regulated smoking in indoor public places since the mid 1970s. The law prohibits smoking in food markets, buses, theaters, public rest- rooms, public meeting rooms, indoor service lines, health care facilities, pharmacies, libraries and museums. Public acceptance and voluntary com- pliance with the ordinance has been excellent. Violations have decreased as the City, citizens' organizations and businesses have joined in an effort to increase public awareness and as the posting of no-smoking signs has become widespread. The City has expanded smoking restrictions under a new ordinance worked out by an advisory committee of private citizens. The provisions of-the City`s new ordinance generally prohibit smoking in all indoor places where the general puh!ic is normalty allowed, with certain lirriled exceptirnis, antd recjuire the post- _ _ X KING ing of signs advising the public of non- smoking areas. Copies of the complete ordinance and additional information are available from the City Department of Citizens Assistance and Information, 336-6047. Restaurants All restaurants with a seating capacity of 20 or more are required to provide a non-smoking section of sufficient size to accommodate requests from patrons to • be seated in a non-smoking area. Patrons must be advised that such non-smoking sections are available. - • Retail Stores and Service Establishments Smoking is not permitted in those areas of retail stores and service establish- ments - ments which are generally open to the public. Food Markets Smoking is prohibited in every public portion of grocery stores and food markets, and signs are required to be posted at specified locations throughout each market. Signs must be visible to people entering the market, people at meat and produce counters, and people in all check-out lines. Places of Employment Effective July 1, 1984, all employers will be required to make a''good-faith effort" to provide a smoke-free atmosphere in all work places.
