Lmmediately after the vote, a public oipini~an poll was conducted to find out why the people vot'ed, the way they did. Bob Getz, a reporter for the Fort Co:iins'. Co1'oradoan, discovered, not too suprisingly, that the Tobacco Instit'u'te Was behind the survey. The foilowiing excerpts from' his articTe on November i3, 1954, show how he "smoked out" the Institute: 0 In this story, a representative for a ghost calls from a public opinion firm in Houston... She said she worked for Tarrance and Associates, a national research firm, and that the name of the party, paying for the survey at hand' was co'nfidentiall i'nf'ormati on . But it didn't take a sleuth to f'indla suspect in this mystery. Who else would hire a promanenrt Texas firm to figure out why. 1'ittle old Fort Collins approved an ordinance placing strict limits on smoking in publ'ic places? I'11 ti1le this whoduni t"The Return of the Tobacco Troopers, "' After a few preliminaries, the caller wanted to know what i'ssues I recalled the anti-smoking ordinance forces rassingi during the campaign. Then she wanted me to rate the importance of several campaign issues, including government re9uila'tilo'ns, the or'di'nanc'e's effect on businesses,, the health of'non-smokers andlspending by the t'ob'acco indust'ry... Other questions' included how I found out about the ordinance, where I saw:or heard campa'i'gn adi, ertisernent's, if I' had seen, the ordinance on the ballot and the reason I votedlthe wav I cid. And, of course, there were al: the predictable ques'tions cr. -rt... age, sex, polit, icl leanings and collar color. It was all very prefessional,, and i: was sure Tarranice and Assoc2ates would Eoluf:, be aDle to give the gf',ost a pretty good icea of wh;.~ i vo*.ed the way I' dile. ru*, still the ghost remained a'ghost...
