Humphrey Taylor fs the Deputy Chairman i Chief Operatfng officer of
Louis Harris and Associates, with overall responsibility under Lou Harris
lFor the firm's domestic and international activities.
Ife was born in Iran in (L and spent the next 4 years In India. He
grew up and was educated In Britain at Gordonstoun, and Trinity College,
Cambridge. He served for 2 years in the British Army, was conmtEs.ioned a
Second Lieutenant and for 14 months he eoupnanded African soldiers in the King's
African Rifles In Malawi.
1fe graduated from Cambridge in 1958 In Hatbemat3cs and Social Anthro-
pology. He then worked for the Government of Tanzania for 3 years, both before
and after independence, as a District Officer and Magistrate with widespread
responsibilities for the administration of control of local services, jneZuding
political, agricultural and economic development, roads, schools, hospitals,
elections, and taxation. He also reared a leopard.
After working for 5 months In Paraguay 3n 1962-63, Mr. Taylor returned
to England and began working In survey research with a leading British firm,
National Opinion Polls Ltd., of which he became a Director In 1965.
In 1966 he left to found his own company, Opinion Research Centre,
of which he was Chief Executive officer from Its found#tion until 2976, when
ft had become one of the largest, most prestigious and wide2y-quoted British
survey research organizations with a unique 100% track record In predicting
the leading party In every British General Election and many local elections
and by-elections.
While at Opinton Research Centre, Mr. Taylor conducted all of the
private political polling for the Conservative Party and was a close advisor
to Mr. Edward Heath In the 1970 campaign) In which !!r. Heath and the Tories
scored an unexpected victory)and subsequently to Mrs. Margaret Thatcher. Se
also conducted surveys for.most of the largest BrItfsh companies, tncluding
SheZZ,.BP, Uni2ever, ICI, BAT, for many government agencies, and all the
larger British banks.
In 1970 his canpaay, Opinion Research Centre, was acquired by
Louis Harris and Associates.- Xr. Taylor took ~on -the -addlt-lonai responsibility,
as President of Louis Harris International, for the deve2opment and management
of the Xarris organization's internationa2 busfriess. In 1976 he moved to
1Vew i'ork and in the 4 years since then, Louis Harris and Associates has
trebled An siz'Q.
Jlr. Taylor has had overall responsibility for more than three thousand
surveys and•has personally directed several hundred surveys, In more than 50
