ABC NEWS SHOW: THIS WEEK WZTH DAVI'D~BR,INKLEY July 25. 1993 LENGTH: 9067 words BODY: DAVID BRINKLEY: Los Angeles, great, grand~ golden city of the West, admired and envied around the world, a gol~den, city but nowshowing, a1'itt'le tarnish, andl many people who struggled a long way to get here are now moving out. Why? Because 120,000 defense jobs are gone With the cold war, some neighborhoodss controlled by street gangs with guns andldr gs, stores burned out in last year`ss riot are still burned out, so some people are moving somewhere else. ANNOUNCER: From ABC News, this is a specialieditiionofThis Week With David Brinklev: Now,,from CityWalk at Universal City in Los Angeles; here's David B'rinkbey: ANNOUNCER: Now~ again f nom~ CiitvW~ailk in, Los~ Angeles, Davidi Blrinkle~y.~ 'v1ir. BR'IN KLEy': Your honor, Mayor Riordan, thank you for coming: Pleased to have yow Mayor R'~ICHARD~~ R~~1~ORDAN, Loti~ Angeles: Welll; thank~ you, David. ### ;Vbn. WILL: IVbr: Mayor, the National Rifle Association is running, rather powerful ads saying that the experience of the Lo.s Angeles riots, particularly the ICoreans but not jiust the Koreans, when they have, to: arm and defend themselves, proves that gun control's a terrible idea and that, on the contrary, Americans, given the inadequacy of public safety provisions by our cities, Americans ought to go out and arrnithemselves. What's the matter with that argument? Mayor R'IOR'DAN: I think it''s a bad argument. You know, right now im the L.A. schools the status symbol is what type of weapon4 whether you have a Beringer, a, nine- mil]imeter, an Uzi: We have to f nd! ways to get these weapons out of the hands of people. We need stronger type gun controls. I'i believe in, the right of people to bear arms, but not the way the situationls got. But unfortunately we have, you! know, strong constitutional rights against illegal'search and sei¢ure, and it s very, very hard for poliice to:enforce those type of laws. Mr. DONALDSON: Quick qpestion. The city now has an ordinance forbidding smoking in any restaurant. The legislature is making some moves to try to nullify or get around this. Who's right andl who''s going to win? Mayor RIO'R'DAN` Whew: I'I'11 tel I you, that's ai tiough one, because I'm in favor of the smoking, ban4 because as a reformed addict of tobacco, I'd like to see evervbodv else-

Mr. BRINKLEY: WeDl~ Sam is a~ retired smoker. Mr. DONALDSON: Yeah4 I"m hell on wheels. Mayor RIORDAN: B'ui one of the problems is if you i5olate Los Angeles and all the areas around here are alliovred' smoking, it makes our restaurants, our convention center andl everything less competitive. So it's.avery difficult balance. Mr. BRINKLEY: On that note, thank you very much for coming. Mayor RIORDAN: VJeil, thank you very much..
