ABC's Czeorge Strait reports. GEORGE STRAIT (REPORTER): The Environmental Protection Agency says every year in this country passive smoking causes about 3000 lung =ancer deaths among non-smokers and 300,000 bronchial infect, ons among children. Calling passive smoke a Group A_carcinogen means the EPA believes second hand smoke is as dangerous as substances like radon and asbestos. The pressure to ban all smoking where adults work and children play and learn now will be great. FRAN, DU MELLE (AMERICAN LUNG ASSOCIATION): There will be a lot of pressure to regulate the sites where children spend time, especially day care, pre-schools and schools. STRAIT: Are you concerned that maybe the federal government won't move fast enough and that you'll have to depend upon the states to move quicker in establishing these kinds of regulations? DU1MELLE: The states have been more creative in moving on these regulations. STRAIT: Already 44 states have some laws restricting smoking in public places. An agreement to ban smoking on all international airplane flights will take affect in three years. in, an effort to reduce smoking later today the American Heart Association will call for a big increase in cigarette taxes and for the federal government to regulate tobacco like a prescription While Rodw TV Repoas endeavors to ossure the accuracy of mmswo6 wppllsd by i/. 8 cannot be e.sponsi6le for mis/akes or anisaions.
