The Academy has long been aware of the need to include smoking cessation in physician continuing medical education programs. It is our contention that physicians must address and introduce smoking cessation interventions with their patients. As you know, the Academy reaches over 8,500 physicians through the its membership and the specialty societies it manages. We list smoking cessation as a topic in our Roving Symposia series and conducted an all day conference TREATING TOBACCO DEPENDENCE on April 8, 1987. This program, chaired by John Slade, M.D., attracted over 200 persons.
