State colleges to ban smoking effective July 1 Smoking will be taboo in any building on any of Rhode Island's three state college campuse.s, begin- ning July 1. The Board of Governors for High- er Education unanimously passed the no-smoking policy last night. The three colleges were prompt- ed by recent reports from the US. Environmental Protection Agency and the federal Centers for Disease Control warning employers that to- bacco smoking is a major health hazard'and makes the employer vul• nerat.e to the risk of lawsuits. According to the new policy, smoking will not be permitted in- side side any building at the Universitv ~ of Rhode Island, Rhode Island Col- ~ lege and the Community College of f , Rhode Island. ~L. Smoking will be permitted in des- ignated ignated outdoor areas. The ban will extend to the rooms in which meetings or conferences ~ y sponsored by the Governors or the th il h ld All buildings and facilities will be clearly posted with "non-smokin g ; ~ " signs at the entranzes. area Through the state Department of Health, information on smoking ces- l° sation programs and.polides will be made available to all employees.
