MODEL ORDINANCE ELIMINATING TOBACCO ADVERTISEMENTS IN MUNICIPAL
(OR COUNTY) ATHLETIC' FACILITIES
Section 1. Purpose.
The City Council [or Board of Supervisors] recognizes that smoking is the greatest preventable cause
of
death and disease. Most smokers become addicted before.the age of 21. There is no way to prevent
children from being exposed to advertisements forcigarettes and othertobacco products at athletic
events.
Children are especially susceptible to advertisements associated with athletic events because of
their
interest in sports and athletes. In addition, many athletic events are broadcast on television, and
advertisements in athletic facilities cause tobacco products to be illegally advertised on
television, with
alarge audience of children. Therefore, itis essential to eliminate tobacco advertising in any form
in athletic
facilities owned by the City [or County] or any agency of the City [or County].
Section 2. Policy Concerning Tobacco Advertisements in Public Athletic Facilities.
It is the policy of the City [or County] of [specify] that no advertisement for any tobacco product
shall
be accepted or placed in any stadium, tennis facility, coliseum, or other facility which hosts
athletic events
owned by the City [or County] or any agency of the City [or County].
