of hun disease, offering apot=ntiaJ'explsrution for the high
tisk attribunble to saiolcng. Cigarece smoke oontaitu nnsaer
ous oxidann, and smokers exhibit reduced cinvlating con-
aatrstions of the andoxidant vitamin ascorbic acid (AA).,
primarily as a result of oxidant-mediated deplEtion although
reduced dietary intake also has been noted. We measured
plasma AA concentrations and dietary AA intake in non-
smoking women exposed to z20 hr/wk ETS, i.e., passive
smokers (PS). as compasrd with nonsmokers a'.th 52 hrs
ETS exposurcJwk (NS) and aedve smoite:a (AS), to assess
whether PS also may exhibit suboprimal AA nutrimrs. Piasma
AA.vas measured by 1;pLC with elcctrocliemical dctrctios.
