SHOW: THIS WEEK WITH DAVID BRINKLEY
July 25, 1993
LENGTH: 9067 words
BODY:
DAVID BRINKLEY: Los Angeles, great, grand, golden city of the West, admired and
envied around the world, a golden city but now showing a little tarnish; and
many people who struggled a: long way to get: here are now moving out. Why?
Because 1120,000 defense jobs are gone with the cold war,, some neighborhoods
controlled by street gangs with guns and drugs, stores burned out in last year's
riot are still burned out, so some people are moving somewhere else.
aNNOCNCER: From ABC News, this is a special edition of This Week With David
Brinkley. Now, from CityWalk at Universal City in Los Angeles, here's David
Brinkley.
ANtiOL'NCER: Now again from~CitvWalk in Los Angeles, David Brinkley.
Mr. BRINKLEY: Your honor. !vlavor Riordan, thank you for coming. Pleased to have
you.
Mayor RICHARD RIORDAN, Los Angeles: Well, thank you, David.
Mr. WILL: Mr. Mayor, the National' Rifle Association is running rather powerful
ads saying that the experience of the Los Angeles riots, particularly the
Koreans but not just the Koreans, when they have, to arm and defend themselves,
proves that gun control's a terrible idea and that, on the contrary, Americans,
given the inadequacy of public safety provisions by our cities, Americans ought
to go out and arm themselves. Whats the matter with that argument?
Mayor RIORDAN: I think it's a bad argument. You know, right now in the L.A.
schools the status symbol is what type of weapon, whether you have a Beringer, a
nine- millimeter, an Uzi. We have to find ways to get these weapons out of the
hands of people. We need stronger type gun controls. I believe in the right of
people to bear arms, but not the way the situation's got. But unfortunately we
have, you know, strong constitutional rights against illegal search and seizure,
and it's very, very hard for police to enforce those type of laws.
Mr. DONALDSON: Quick question. The city now has an ordinance forbidding smoking
in~any restaurant. The legislature is making some moves to try to nullify or get
around this. Who's right and who's going to win?
Mayor RIORDAN: Whew. I'll tell you, that's a tough one, because I'tn in favor of
the smoking ban, because as a reformed addict of tobacco, I'd like to see
everybody else-
