Turkey Mr. Ilter TUrkmen Ambassador andiPermanent Represent+ative (formerly Minister of External Affairs of Turkey) To all persons met I said that I am a cons'ultant to the five largest tobacco companies and that I wanted to meet thezn, because they represent countries where tobacco makes a significant economic contribution, to their countries. That I would like to call on them during the second half of January 1985 to discuss a presentation we would like to make to them and their Ambassadors which would, among other things, outline how important it is to defend the tobacco leaf against a concerted world-wide attack. That4 we: would like to address ourselves also to, their Ambassadors, because the issue had become a highly political one. Their response was, without exception, very positive. All were interested to discuss and attend such a presentation. You will note that in the absence of the Ambassador (apart from Turkey) at the receptioni, I met the commercial oriented'offices of the Permanent Missions.. Because of their functions they are: probably the most interested in what we will have to say, and therefore best suited to get their Ambassadors involved. Because of their truly positive reaction, which: I found very encouragiing, I suggest that we start working on the presentations for these countries. BDH:/HF 111284'
