B. SIMPSON - REPORT ON yISITS~ TO NMAS IN SWEDEN, FINLAND,
NpRWAY AND GERMANY
Sweden - November 13'
Satisfactory discussions were held with the Association and
executive members of Svenska Tobaks.
The consensus is that the anti-smoking activity has levelled
off and that no further punitive action is~ likely in the near
future..
The public/'passive smoking issue is a matter of public debate
and the outcome of an appeal by the Swedish Insurance Board
against a court decision: grantingi worker compen~sation for
injury due to passive smoking will be important.
Recent sponsorship' of cultural events by Svenska Tobaks and'
Philip Morris were well received by the media.
Finland - November 14
There is little that INFOTAB can do in relieving the difficult
conditions applying to the Finnish Tobacco Industry. The
public/passive smoking issue can be defended and a full
discussion was held with the Association members on this
subject.
Norway - November 15:
The visit to the Association coincid'ed~ with their monthly
Council meeting and the discussions centred! on taxation and
public/passive smoking.
Members agreed to cooperate with a study on the smoking habits
of young people should a suitable format be developed. Claims
by opponents of, a considerably lower level of smoking due to
advertising bans reduired'checkingifor validity.

Germany - December 6
See Passive Stnoking Item 6.
