Wall Vice President and Associate General Counsel Philip Morris Companies, Inc. 320 Park Aven>_:e New York, NY 10017 My dear Charles: I am enclosing a list of those donors whose funds have been used to help us set up the Coronary/Cancer Prevention Project. We obtained these funds initially to get a wider base of support for the project so that no one could or ever would say that only Philip Morris financed this research project: • Also, at the present time, the various corporations which helped us enroll the 3,700 participants into the study have made available to us rooms in which 1,500 of this cohort can hold group sessions. Since all of our counseling is done after corporate hours, the security and janitorial services necessary for us to use these rooms after work hours have been donated. This is one of the reasons that this thirteen to fourteen year project will only cost $1,000,000 a year and'not $140,000,000 as was spent in the Multiple Risk Factor Intervention Trial (MRFIT) over its ten year extent. I can hope, too, that the Coronary/Cancer Prevention Project will not be labeled as was the MRFIT project which was described as "a debacle" by The Wall Street Journal. At our Board'' of Directors meeting last week, it was also.pointed out, after your letter was read to them, that this research project was never presented to any corporation as a benefit to their employees but rather as a possible benefit to humanity. This is because only our type of study can indicate whether emotional stress is playing a part in the pathogenesis of coronary heart disease and cancer. I am reasonably sure that it will be considered, in the long haul, one of the landmark clinical studies of this century. That this expectation is not unreasonable is indicated by the fact that the Journal of the American Medical .`' ~. ~~ A „- X f'~~ NOW I .'\ 4 `ii Vv~ .v- yit 1, 1 v V t w~ rKf~t~xT ~\D . i'~ /\. aaa111rrrFFF CI E\GCLTIYE10FK'F+. t yy.Vf .~1 •IAFD1C.lL1)IKFCTC)R ~A1 ~IIVrIYr1,V,\•4.1..

Atty. Charles R. Wall December 17, 1991 Page 2 Association in listing the one hundred most important publications in its one hundred year history of publishing listed our 1959 and 1964 research projects among these one hundred. Indeed, the 1959 announcement of the relationship of Type A behavior to coronary heart disease ranked as number twelve in the one hundred articles. I also am enclosing a letter from Dr. Ted Cooper which I intended to show you folks when you were out here. Coming from a tough med~cal director of the National Heart, Lung & Blood Institute (if there ever was one), I consider it quite a compliment. I think it possible that he may again give us a contribution, as he did in 1988 when he was apprised of our receiving the grant from Philip Morris. Sincerely yours, ~1'.Tk Meyer Friedman, M.D. Medical Director MF/dpr Enc.
