Biography
Dr. Alejandro Zaffaroni, Founder and Co-Chairman of the Board of Directors of
ALZA Corporation, Founder and member of the Policy Board of DNAX Research
Institute of Molecular and Cellular Biology, Inc., and Founder and Managing Director of
Affymax, N.V. is noted for his major contributions to, the field of steroid biochemistry
and for his pioneering accomplishments in the field of controlled drug delivery systems.
A native of Montevideo, Uruguay, Dr. Zaffaroni in 1941 was awarded his B.S. degree
from the University of Rochester under the auspices of a scholarship granted by the
Institute of International Education. He remained with the University of Rochester, New
York until 1951 as a National Institutes of Health Research Fellow.
In 1951, Dr. Zaffaroni joined Syntex Corporation as Associate Director of
Biological Research and subsequently held positions as Director of Research, Executive
Vice President of the Corporation, and a member of the Board of Directors; eventually,
he became President of Syntex Laboratories and President of Syntex Research.
He resigned from Syntex in mid-1968 to establish ALZA Corporation and to begin
a new scientific endeavor-pursuit of the therapeutic application of humoral and
hormonal factors. On of his aims was to develop more physiological approaches to
therapy, involving drug delivery systems that would maintain temporal patterns of
pharmacologically active substances according to the individual needs of patients. To
bring to life such research goals, new and precise physical, chemical, and biological
systems had to be developed that could not only deliver drugs, but also guide and
monitor their administration.
In 1980, Dr. Zaffaroni founded and became Chairman of the Board of Directors
of DNAX Ltd. The new company was formed to develop macromolecular products for
medicine by combining the technologies of genetic engineering and irnmunobiology. In
mid-1982, DNAX Research Institute of Molecular and Cellular and Biology, Inc. was
acquired by Schering-Plough. Dr. Zaffaroni serves as a member of the Policy Board.
In 1988, Dr. Zaffaroni founded Affymax, N_V., and assumed the position of
Managing Director. Affymax is a new therapeutic drug discovery company that will
dramatically reduce the cost and time required to identify promising compounds for
treating important diseases. He successfully recruited numerous world renowned
scientists who now work with Affymax in the development of a novel affinity matrix drug
discovery system. This technology combines synthetic chemistry with advanced
techniques pioneered by the semiconductor industry, notably photolithography,
minaturization and parallel processing.
