"It's The Law" Program -- DRAFT Co-sponsoring org. press release text _(name) Participates in Nationwide Program to Help Retailers Prevent Tobacco Sales To Underage Persons In the face of growing concern about smoking by underage persons,._(name) is joining with many other national, regional and local retailers and vendors who sell tobacco products in a new customer/employee awareness program, entitled "IT'S THE LAW." The "IT'S THE LAW" program materials are designed to convey the message to both store customers and store employees that it is against the law in ( state ) to sell tobacco products to those under age (_) and that _lnamel intends to prevent sales to underage youth by enforcing the state law to the fullest extend possible. Colorful blue, orange and white signs, door decals and window displays stating: "It's The Law: We do not sell tobacco products to persons under are being installed to remind employees and customers of the state law and (name)'s_ full compliance with it. Lapel buttons, also using the blue-orange-white color theme will be provided to store employees to wear while on duty. A brochure describing the goals and intend of the program and the details and penalties of (state's) law will be given to each employee. The brochure also provides tips on proper verification of age, acceptable forms of identification and how to deal with a customer who becomes upset with asked for identification. To help ensure employee compliance, they will be asked to sign an Employee Acknowledgement Form which indicates they have read all program materials and understand sname)'s commitment to enforcing the law. (Suggested remark:) "Underage smoking is attracting attention all over the country and we intend to be seen by the community as an important part of the solution. We can and will do more to enforce the law that prevents young people from purchasing tobacco products," said • The "IT'S THE LAW" tobacco retailing program, announced in Washington, D.C. on October 11 by it's principal sponsor, The Tobacco Institute, and is currently being rolled-out nationwide in convenience stores, grocery stores, drug stores, discount stores, gas stations, independent businesses and other retail outlets. It is also being adapted by many in the vending machine industry. # ~ #
