DuPuis Vice President - Research Philip Morris, Inc. P. 0. Box 1895 Richmond 15, Virginia Dear Mr. DuPuis: i i We wish to thank you for your letter of May 14 relative to our request for some support for ou,- research work which is pointing to an infectious agent as being the cause of cancer. As previously pointed out and indicated in the enclosed press story, our findings indicate that the tobacco industry is corm- pletely removed from the cancer problem. With regard to the Tobacco Industry Research Committee, we realize that the tobacco industry has been supplying large funds for their distribution, but I think it is also a fair state- ment that nothing very spectacular has come from their expenditures that, thus far, has remc, ved the tobacco industry from the constant barrage of accusations that tobacco is related to cancer. On the contrary, our findings fully answer these accusations and our work has been presented before a number of distinguished medical bddies. If the Philip Morris Company could see fit to give even minimal financial support to help us continue this work, there is excellent evidence that such support will pay large dividends in relieving human suffering and, at the same time, answer finally those condemning the tobacco industry. We would appreciate your giving this matter further con- sid'eration and I again thank you for your considerate letter. Very truly, J. W. Brandt, M.D. Director f Enclosure 01 2o2224a234
