PROJECT TITLE:
PROJECT LEADER:
PERIOD COVERED: Flavor Deve,lopment
C. N. Kounnas
July 1 - 31, 1981
WRITTEN BY: W. R. Bell
DATE OF REPORT: August 7, 1981
I. Low Delivery Program
A review of previous cigarette models for "Project Grow" has been completed.
Additional cigarette models have been requested using current cigarette
specifications with variations in blend and after-cut.
Cambridge Menthol 1,00 mm cigarettes are in the field. A close-out date of
mid-August will result in preliminary reports on these cigarettes.
A memo was written with suggestions for models to be used in the B&H Ultra
Lights Menthol.
II. After-cut and Casing Substitution
Preliminary results for POL 4136 (Merit with casing chocolate substitute)
indicate no significant differences.
Several POL tests with MS substitute are pending cigarettes.
Several POL tests of menthol cigarettes are at various stages. These
involve alternate sources of menthol, as well as humectant rearrangements.
III. Distinctively-Flavored Cigarettes
POL 4199 (low menthol) i~s in the field. POL 4200 and POL 4201 (low WS)
' are to be shipped early August. POL 9035 (Merit-type 100 WS - 9 mg vs.
Salem Lights 100) cigarettes are being made.
Northwind test market began in July, 1981. Cigarettes produced!for this
test market have been subjectively monitored by members of Flavor Develop-
ment and found to be on target.
IV. Special Investigations
Accelerated aging of Northwindand Merit Menthol has been conducted and is
awaiting analytical results prior to being reported.
Alternate methods of applying WS are under investigation. Cigarettes made
after WS cigarette production and clean-up procedures were evaluated'sub-

jectively. It was determined that the clean-up was adequate for this product.
In the Burley Reduction Study, internal paneli evaluations were completed,
and POL tests were requested.
Initial POL test results for three models for Project Tomorrow are expected
soon.
V. Services to Other Groups
Preliminary work to qualify alternate after-cut components for Manufacturing
is in progress.
Subjective screening of cigarettes from Manufacturing as well as within R&D
were conducted. These cigarettes compared changes in seam adhesives, tipping
adhesives, manufacturing changes and filter modifications.
