CHARGE NUMBER: 2305 PROGRAM TITLE: PROJECT LEADER: PERIOD COVERED: Flavor Development J. W. Swain July 1 - 31, 1981 DATE OF REPORT: August 10, 1981 WRITTEN BY: I. RL Flavor J. W. Swain and' L. S. Wu Results of V-3848 testing Y79-3 Marlboro cigarettes with modified Burley casing (Project Read) are due in August. Tests of other substitutions in the Burley spray (V-3849 and 3850) have been released. Project Read substitutions in RL, RCB, and Burley casing look promising in Merit on initial internal evaluations. Evaluations in Marlboro are contin- uing. Further storage stability tests have been initiated for the modified RL and RCB tests. II. Cooked Flavors Cooked Flavor (393) was produced in D pilot plant for a Park 500 run on August 13 and 1,4. The RL produced will be used to initi'ate a September Test Market of a Y83-1 Marlboro. Preliminary results of POL 3165, which tested a Y79-3 Marlboro control vs. a Y83-1 Marlboro with CTB and cooked flavored RL test, found the test pre- ferred by the full flavor smokers. The full fliavor smokers also found the test to be milder, less harsh, to have good taste, cooler, to leave a good aftertaste, and to be more acceptable. Preliminary results of POL 4223, which tested a Y79-3 Merit control vs. a Y83'-1i Merit with cooked flavored RL test, showed no significant differences in preference. However, the Merit smokers found the control to be milder and more acceptable. The status of the other consumer panel tests are listed'. below: N-3168 - in field N-3169 - analytical: N-4219 - released N-4220 - released HTI 2450/2451 - released HTI 2452/2453 - released HTI 2454/2455 - released HTI 7093/7094 - released III.
