IN-REP June, 1991 - 2 Visits/Contacts made by S&T'staff : Austria, England, France, Germany, Spain, The Netherlands, and the United States. (I)-SCIENTIFIC BRIEFINGS, MEDIA WORK - Briefings were given to (a) Mr. NIGEL HAWKES, science editor of The Times, (b) scientists of the Japanese Tobacco Company and one of their scientific advisors, (c) an Italian scientist who is a consultant to SCR Associati, Milam, and (id) Corporate Affairs staff from PM Spain. A meeting took place with Mr. ALAN CAMPBELL-JOHNSON in view of expanding!the network of contacts in the political world. The video "International News" was re-cut and reviewed. (2)-EXTRAMURAL PROJECTS,. PRIMARILY IAO EXPERIMENTAL WORK - PRESENT STATUS : - TNO CORRELATION OF RSP MEASUREMENT METHODS - OBJECTIVE : TO ESTABLISH A CORRELATION BETWEEN THE RESULTS OF THE FILTER PAD AND LIGHT SCATTERING METHODS. STATUS : The final report has been received. The report shows that light scattering methods can only be used under well defined situations. Measurements in normal situations show extremely high variations. The authors are now working on an abridged version of the report for publication. - TNO - AIR FLOW PATTERNS IN AIRCRAFT CABINS - OBJECTIVE : TO IMPROVE THE AIR QUALITY IN' PASSENGER CABINS OF NARROW-BODY AIRCRAFT. STATUS . A report is beingg prepared on mathematical models which can be derived from the experimentali data obtained from the mock-up model. Possible publications and future research, directions are now being considered. - IMPERIAL COLLEGE, LONDON - IAQ IN UK OFFICES - OBJECTIVE : TO SUPPLEMENT THE BASIC RESULTS OF THE "PERRY STUDY" WITH SOME MORE DETAILED AND REFINED INVESTIGATIONS (e.g. THE TIMEWISE CHANGE IN IAQ). STATUS : A novel type of laser-based RSP counter was finally rejected because of
Page 4: hrx58e00
M-REP June, 1991 - 3 large long-term fluctuations and lack of correlation with gravimetric methods. - FRESENIUS - METHODS FOR IAQ MEASUREMENT - OBJECTIVE~: TO DEVELOP EQUIPMENT' (NON-OBTRUSIVE AND LABORATORY TYPE), AND METHODS TO MEASURE A WIDE VARIETY OF IAQ PARAMETERS. STATUS : No new developments. - NEURATH - VENTILATION REGIMES - OBJECTIVE : TO STUDY HOW IAQ IS INFLUENCED BY DIFFERENT TYPES OF VENTILATION, AND THEIR CONCOMITANT EFFICACIES. STATUS : Experiments of the flow characteristics of the chamber with simulated smokers are ongoing. It may be necessary to install a cooling device for the incoming air so as to stabilise the air layers in the displacement ventilation mode. - INBIFO - HUMAN CONTRIBUTIONS TO STALE AIR - OBJECTIVE : TO RELATE STALENESS OF AIR TO HUMAN METABOLIC COMPOUNDS. STATUS : Work continues on using a mass spectrometer (MS) to identify the "peak of interest", but it has been complicated by the large number of peaks and the change in retention times when the MS is connected to the GC. By isolating sections of the human body it seems that the material originates from the skin and not from breath. Measurements have shown it disappears from a room within a couple of hours, but this will be repeated with carbon dioxide measurements to d'etermine the role of ventilation. - NILSEN, TRONDHEIM UNIVERSITY - NICOTINE' CONTENT OF HUMAN HAIR AS A POSSIBLE MONITOR FOR ETS EXPOSURE - OBJECTIVE : TO ESTABLISH WHETHER OR NOT THE NICOTINE DEPOSITS FOUND IN HAIR COULD GIVE A QUANTITATIVE INDICATION OF ETS EXPOSURE. STATUS : No new developments reported'.this month. - GORROD/SCHWARTZ/WAHREN - NICOTINE METABOLISM STUDIES - OBJECTIVE: TO DESCRIBE AND MEASURE METABOLIC PATHWAYS OF NICOTINE. STATUS . Invitations have been sent to 17 persons asking, them to contribute specific chapters towards a book on nicotine and its metabolisms. The computer model
Page 5: hrx58e00
M-REP June, 1991 - 4 - is being improved to combine pharmacodynamics (response changes according to treatment history) with the physiological phamacokinetic. - SCHNEIDER - COMPARING RISK FACTORS IN THE MODERN ENVIRONMENT - OBJECTIVE . TO INVESTIGATE AND ANALYSE MATHEMATICAL MODELS FOR RISK ASSESSMENT UNDER COMPETING RISK FACTORS AND CONFOUNDING CONDITIONS. STATUS . Testing of the computer programme has continued in order to identify and eliminate problems, and to improve its capabilities. - FRESENIUS - NICOTINE AND RELATED ALKALOIDS IN FOOD - OBJECTIVE: TO CHECK A VARIETY OF WIDELY USED FOOD AND SPICES FOR THE PRESENCE OF NICOTINE, NORNICOTINE, ANABASINE AND COTININE, AND TO DETERMINE THE AMOUNTS QUANTITATIVELY. STATUS : Due to technical difficulties there will be a delay for the results on teas, vegetables, and other foodstuffs. - LEE / GARD][NER - AVIAN CONTACTS AND RELATED DISEASES - OBJECTIVE . TO DEVELOP QUESTIONNAIRES AND CARRY OUT INTERVIEWS TO OBTAIN INFORMATION ON THE INFLUENCE OF CONTACTS WITH PET' BIRDS IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF LUNG DISEASES. STATUS : Results from 86 cases and 114 controls have been put on the computer, compared with an ultimate target of 200 cases and 400 controls. There will be no statistical evaluation before the data set is complete. - WEETMAN - REVIEW OF ASSUMPTIONS MADE BY TECHNICAL COMMITTEES WHEN DECIDING ON 'SAFE' EXPOSURE LEVELS - OBJECTIVE : TO IDENTIFY THE' SETS OF ASSUMPTIONS USED BY VARIOUS TECHNICAL COMMITTEES IN' SETTING 'SAFE' LEVELS OF EXPOSURE TO PUTATIVE INDUSTRIAL HAZARDS. STATUS : No new developments. - FRESENIUS - IAQ IN AUTOMOBILES - OBJECTIVE : TO MEASURE THE EXPOSURE OF CAR DRIVERS TO AIR POLLUTION CAUSED BY THE
Page 6: hrx58e00
M-REP June, 1991 - 5 SURROUNDING TRAFFIC. STATUS . No new developments. A delay of the project is likely because of a shortage in trained staff at Fresenius. - FRESENIUS - LOWER ANALYTICAL THRESHOLD FOR GRAVIMETRIC MEASUREMENT OF RESPIRABLE PARTICLES - OBJECTIVE . TO ESTABLISH LOWER THRESHOLD LIMITS FOR GRAVIMETRIC RSP DETERMINATION. STATUS : No new developments. The ultra- sensitive balance is still not working. - TNO - ODOUR TRAPPING BY MEMBRANE FILTRATION - OBJECTIVE : TO REMOVE GASEOUS TOBACCO SMOKE COMPONENTS EFFECTIVELY FROM~ A SMOKE-LADEN ROOM. STATUS : Work is ongoing to define the optimal parameters for filtering hydrophilic gaseous compounds. (3)-PATENTS : D-ALANINE TREATMENT OF TOBACCO. European Patent Application No. 8719392 - FTR0081.
