I l 6. EXPLANATION OF SLOPE OF DELIVERY LINES, EXiIBITS 5 AND 6* It was noted that the slope of the Barclay FTC tar delivery versus I dilution was greater than that for either the Cambridge or Carlton cigarettes. The reason for this is apparent from the Brown & Williamson Barclay patent** which states that the "invention further provides a cigarette filter for lowering tar predominantly by ventilation instead of filtration." Basically, the filter efficiency of the Barclay cigarette is substantially lower than that of the Cambridge or Carlton. Thus when the dilution is reduced or removed, the tar delivery rises on the Barclay product faster than on the other two. Another way of noting this fact is from reading the charts from the other direction, which shows that substantially more dilution is needed in the Barclay to achieve equivalent tar to the Cambridge or Carlton..' *Memorandum To The Federal Trade Commission From Philip Morris Incorporated Concerning Barclay Cigarettes And A Proposed Change In The Apparatus Used In The Commission's Laboratory For Testing "Tar" Delivery. **U. S. Patent No. 4,256,122
