At the Board breakfast, you asked me for a short report on the IARC study. I attach a
situation analysis and plan to move forward.
I want to draw your attention to two critical points:
1. Some good preliminary work has been done on this study, its methodology,
principal researchers, likely outcome and ways it can and cannot be infiuenced.
By necessity, we need the involvement of scientists, lawyers, communications,
and government affairs people to carry out the plan -- because of the number of
organizational and functional overlaps, this group needs to be pulled together and
have a formal mission and leader.
2. This is particularly true given MAM's request to me that we try to find a way to
sponsor or develop an objective study as a counter weight to the EPA. Our
scientists see some possibility of our joining with IARC in a full' risk assessment.
Obviously, that would be a huge step, fraught with risks, which would require us
to ask a number of difficult questions before we could make a decision. That will
require an extremely disciplined effort, and we will not get there with an informal
group without clear leadership and accountability.
I will give you a call llater this week to discuss.
