~
with enthusiasm for the work that you
Henry Mcln e cal d me at home and wondered whether it would be pos-
sible for me to o n the Board of the American Health Foundation, I ex-
plained to Henry that this was "my year for a malignancy" -- and it's
been a tough one for me, though everything has turned out quite well and
my progno sis is A-1. But still, it leave s me with the que stion of husband-
ing my energies and focusing on the truly urgent things that I must do from
a business standpoint.
I did make a counter-suggestion to Henry to which he reacted most favor-
ably. Namely, I suggested to him that Saul Warshaw join the Board. Saul,
as you can imagine, is even closer to the "firing line" here at Ruder & Finn
than I am and he has the muscle to get from Ruder & Finn all the talents
and resources that he would want. I also told Henry that because of the
fact that Philip Morris is a client of ours -- in fact, our nicest client (in
terms of people and warmth of relattonship) - - I would want to make sure
that you knew it -- and that our participation with you was known to them
a s well.

Ernst L. Wynder, M. D. - 2 - June 27, 1974
When I mentioned this to my good friends at P°ailip Morris, they were very
enthusiastic about our doing everything we can to be helpful to you and, in
fact, volunteered their estimate that the work that you are doing is of the
very highest order - soned value in the smoldng and health field.
ecause of the long-standing relationship
in his "hip-pocket" whether or not I am on
your Board - and ttia. be glad to take on any single or individual
chore that was peculiar to my own talent and background whenever you and
Henry felt it was appropriate. And for that you certainly don't need me on
your Board. You've got it.
Henry said that he cleared this general point of view with you in advance of
his phone call to me -- and therefore I assume that it is all okay with you.
If you do want Saul on the Board, Saul is willing and delighted and he'll do
his level best to be productive and helpful to you. I'll pitch in informally
and among all of us I think we can make a great team.
Do let me hear from you as to whether or not this accurately reflects your
viewpoint as I received it from Henry. From our end it's all okay.
Best wishes,
William Ruder
