Re: Dr. Bennett Jenson's CTR Special Project
Gentlemen:
Dr. Bennett Jenson of Georgetown University is currently
receiving support for his investigation into the presence of papil-
lomavirus DNA in malignant squamous cell lesions of the upper and
lower respiratory tracts on a CTR Special Project. The fresh lung
tissue for this investigation was supplied by Dr. Pat Dean of the
Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis. Dr. Dean was compensated in
the amount of $3,500 every six months from project funds. Unfor-
tunately, Dr. Dean has suffered a stroke and will be unable to
continue his involvement in the project.
In light of this development, Dr. Jenson has suggested
that the project be modified to take advantage of a new and sub-
stantially more sensitive test for the detection of papillomavirus
DNA in paraffin-embedded tissue sections. Consequently, he has
requested that the funds designated for Dr. Dean, but not expended
($14,000), and a supplementary grant of $16,000 be used to purchase
laboratory equipment to continue the project. The equipment
involved is a polymerase chain reaction machine ($10,000) and a
DNA synthesizer ($20,000). All the reagents and technical support
would be covered by current funding.
We believe that this supplementary request for $16,000 is
appropriate, given the change in circumstances. Moreover, it would
provide the opportunity for Dr. Jenson to study archival material
from his own department via the newest pathologic techniques.
