Dear Tom:
Thank you for your comments and suggestions concerning
the Japanese researcher inlGeneva, I' quite agree with
your view points and we wilil try to solve her
engagement problemlat the university - not necessarilly
at our unit - throughlthe means of a private Swi.ss
foundation.
Let me in this context express how valuable I think it
is that we can openly d'ilscuss possibilities for chang,es
or expansions of our joint program like this. Even if
the question of money is always embarrassing,, I very
much appreciate the tradition that we have established
to discuss any'new projects openly even if the
end-result is negative.
Regarding our joint work in general, I have a few
comments for your consideration. Work at INBIFO is
going very well and the exchange of input between
INBIFO, our unit at Geneva and the department in
Gothenburg is very useful for all parties i:nvollvedi. We
have recentLy terminated a study on the interstitial
lung cells after tobacco smoke exposure and I intend to
present the data at INBIFO when the final results are
availablie. The exchange with Patrick Holt is a further
interesting collaboration and one of his technicians
wilil spend'a few months at IiNBIFO for exchange of
experimental techniques.

Regarding our own work in Gothenburg, the efforts have
been concentrated upon long term exposures with
secondary cell reactions influenced by cigarette smoke.
The last study demonstrates that in spite of what i~s
said in the literature, the macrophage capacity to
secrete chemotactic factors after cigarette smoke
exposure seems to impaired whereas a:slower response
from the neutrophils may be the reason why there is
less accumulation of neutrophils in the lung after an
inflammatory stimulance. This work has taken a
considerable time as it involves five to seven weeks
exposures withia fairly tedious evaluation of
interstitial lung cells. I hope, however, to have a
manuscript describing those data avai~lablie within the
near future.
In this context, a few comments about the budget. Thiss
has now been at the same level for seveniyears.
Initially the increasing costs were compensated by the
stronger exchange position of the d'ollar. As you know,
this has changed during the last years and we have now
been forced to;cut back expenditures as we are hit both
by the exchange rate decline and the increase in
prices. With a more limited program it is, however,
feasible to keep within the budget until you consider
it possiblie to,expand it toicompensate for increasing,
costs at some future date.. The only actual cost which,
will be increasing slightly is that for travel although
percentage wise it wi11! not be very dramatic.
As you may recall, I organized a small symposium on
inhalation toxicity last year in France where two
persons from INBIFO (Walk and~Kind), as well as Patrick
Holt and'ipersons from our Geneva unit participated.
This type of very informali exchange of information was
very fruitful and we were planning to repeat it again
this year. The subject will be "Cell dynamics in
pulmonary inflammation" and the meeting is planned to
take place July 11 to 3, 1987. In addition to Patrick
Holt, I intended to invite Clive Page from London, who
has done extensive work on platelets and with whom we
have been collaborating over the years. The total

budget for this meeting,is estimatedito about 3 800
dollars. Is this a sum that you could helip out with
wholly or partially from an addition to the budget or
shall I try to meet it within the framework of the
present bud'get?
Regarding the ETS question, this i~s now in a temporary
hold. I am still pressing on Linda Koo:to pushifor the
publication of her tea data in its originali form. A
short summary of the findings will appear in the
manuscript on tea mutagenicity, which will be forwarded
to you for approval shortly. Follow-up contacts have
indicated that the on-going national toxicology program
study on quercetine has yiel&negative result when rats
are fed with the substance andithe presence of tumors
is investigated. I intend to di~scuss this further with
INBIFO at my next visit to establish plans for the
continuation in this very interesting area. We have
also requested a planning grant for an epidemiological
study in Swed'en with one of the aims to try to
reproduce Linda Koo's data from her Chinese population.
So far, I have heard nothing regarding the possible ETS
meeting in Japan and I gather that I will not be
included in the program. Linda Koo is apparently going,
to participate and I may be able to di~scuss this with
Don Hoel as we are planning to meet during one of his
forthcoming,visits to Europe.
I hope that the above reviews and comments have been
useful to you and I am looking forward to your comments
on anyone of them.
With my kindest regards
Yours sincerely
Ragnar Rylander
