PH'ILIP MORRIS U. S. A. e~"> INTER-OFFICE CORRESPONDENCE RICHNOHD, VIRG INIA PERSONAL & C0NFI CENTIAL To: . Mr. Hugh Cul l ma.m Date: Apri 1 8, 1982 From: . T. S. Osdene Subject: . Bio1ogica1 Effects of Smokeless Tobacco Products In response to your request of March 29th, I have had a search made on the biological effects of smokeless tobacco which would include fine cut chewing tobacco, moist smuff andl othier related products. As you will see from the a-ttached paper, there are a number of untoward bio~logical effects associated with these materials. I believe the correlation between use of these substances and oral', cancer i s qui te strong. You wi lil, hiowever, note that there has been no experimental production of tumors in animal model!s using snuff, but this may well be due to the fact that inadequate testing has been done. It could also be due to species specificity. If I can be of further assistance, please let me know. / iw Enclosure O
