Bross and Murfee The purpose of the meeting was stated to be to discuss research on smoking and health and to develop new proarams on s:noking problems. Ernphasis was placed on the development of a less harmful ctgaret. Dr. Wynder stated that tobacco industry people were no tnvi e o t is meeting because two days. they are "not free to report their own research results." The meeting lasted The group was divided into four subcommittees for purposes of specialized discussion. Possibilities were tests based on studies published by Bross and Gibson and by Wynder, et al., most recently in the Journal of the American tests with each other. Emphasis was placed on in vitro tests. They talked about the cffect of smoking on the acute episode. It was hypothcsized that cardiac arrhythmias may be caused by smo?:ing. The group talked about the development of new cooperative programs for the identity of less hazard- ous cigarets. They felt that positive mouse skin results should be confirnied -by tests in other systems such as animal inhalation. me
