These conclusions were an+, nounced Thursday by the Cali- fornia Medical Association after a_year-long study of .dcc:,~rs'; views on srr,oking. The survey was financed~ by the State De- partment of Public Health. In a sampling of~ 4,388 ph}•~;i- cians, one- doctor in five re- ported he s m o k e d himself. About 40 per cent had n e v e r smoked and 20 per cent had quit in recent years.. The doctors were asked if they discussed the hazards of smoking with their patients. Only 11 per cent replied a*firrn- atively: About 40 ;ier cent said they brought up the subjpct if their patients' diseases appeared to be a^gravated~ by smoking.
