14. Boston, Mass. MORNINGGLOBE December 8, 1967 Those cigar-sm-oking sirens By PATRICIA McCORi<tACK United Press lnternat/bnal. NEW YORK - Congratu- lations, you 15 million males who smoke cigars. Though more than 100;000 or more females are doing liltewise, according t'o indtrstrv-spokes- men, it's hardly a drop in the ashtray. The cii;;r-stnoking territory, it's safe to : ~,ay, remains male-doininat ed. The list of publiclyy ac- knowledged females who smoke cigars includes Greta Garbo. Mrs. Abe Fortas, Lau- ren Bacall; Marlene Di- etrich, Elizabeth Taylor. On it are bluebloods, jct' setters, big and little lights from the worlds of enter- tainment, literature, art. But despite all thepufltintiby celebrities, femrles in enormous numbers-say millions - liaven't been reaching for cigars. And they are not, thank heaven; reaching for those big fat cigars politicians, bankers and other ultraman- ly types smoke. The indus4'ry is catering, to women, bringing out in- creased numbers of cigars for "her." They're thinner, packaged in a way to attract the female. The Cigar Insti- tute of America expects as .more cigars are produced' for females more women will take up the habit. Walter K. Lyon, president of the Institute, watches fig- ures om cigar smokingg among women. "However," he says, "I still find ex- tremely distasteful the idea of a well-groomed woman puffing away on a big cigar. "As lbng as she confines herself to any one of the long slender shapes or the many cigarillo types cur- rently on the market and as long as she handles her cigar gracefully, I do not feel that the habit in the least detracts from her femi- ninity." The better restaurants about New York may be typical in their attitude toward: females who smoke cigars. At th efamous Four Seasons, for example, cigar smnking takes place quite a: lot in the private rooms. It A_..^.Y, :efs_'_ t S stilf takes a little courage to asht ray with discarded stubs. do it in the public rooms. Some female patrons there dip the end ofi their ci- gars in brandy as they smoke. At the fashiRnahll: Vuis:n, the vogue is to use a: cigar holder when smoking, em- phasizing the greater lt•ngth of the cigar. The manager of the St'. Regis Sheraton says he wel- comes cigar-smoking ladies if they smoke with finesse. But as in everything else there are good and bad prac- tices im cigar smoking. Lyon offered these tips to women: - Cigar,s should be lit ekenly and fully t'o assure steady combustion. - The mouth end should never be chewed. - Remove cigar from mouth between puffs and when talking:, - Promptly remove the tF1p:y,-i+1 j:y. 0 P.S. - And please, don't L^t that smoke ruin the drapes!'
