10. Grand Forks, N. Dak. HERALD December 6, 1967' Christmas Seals CHRISTMAS SEALS, the tradi- tionaliadornment of envelopes con- taining holiday greeting cards, will be 60 years old on Saturday. Last year's campaion raised S 3 0. 8 miliion, and the l;t a t i o n a l Tuberculosis Association estimates that the 1967 gross will be around SI million greater. The mone_v will be used to fight both respiratory ~ diseasec (tuberculosis, c h r o n i c bronchitis, eniphysema) and two of their major'Inuses (air pollution, cigarette smoking). Tuherculnsis still is the second biggest killer (after pneumonia) amon,z bacteriali diseases: it clpi•n- ed 8.000 American, lives in 1965. The National Tuherculcsis Association calculates there are 25 million pe,sons irn the United States in- fected ihe tubercle b a c i 1 l u s. Most ef the 50;000 new active TB caFes a year come from this group. The association's interest in other retniratorv diseases dates from 1955. E'mohysema, a lung disorder particulardy nrevalent - a m o n g cigarette smokers and persons in areas wi'thi heavy air pollution, is an increasinn_ly serious problem. Arotmd 19,000 deaths were at• tributed to emphvsr.ma in F.S5, the mast reeert, year for whinc com- plete data are availOhli'. Moreover, the number of death5' ascribed to emnhvsema has been doubling everv five vears. Part of the in- crease ie due to greater awareness of the disease on the part of phvsi- cians, but most of it no doubt stems from vnlnr.tarv or involuntarv in- halation of lung-damaging fumes.
