Christmas Seals
CHRISTMAS SEALS, the tradi-
tionaliadornment of envelopes con-
taining holiday greeting cards, will
be 60 years old on Saturday. Last
year's campaion raised S 3 0. 8
miliion, and the l;t a t i o n a l
Tuberculosis Association estimates
that the 1967 gross will be around
SI million greater. The mone_v will
be used to fight both respiratory
~ diseasec (tuberculosis, c h r o n i c
bronchitis, eniphysema) and two of
their major'Inuses (air pollution,
cigarette smoking).
Tuherculnsis still is the second
biggest killer (after pneumonia)
amon,z bacteriali diseases: it clpiTn-
ed 8.000 American, lives in 1965. The
National Tuherculcsis Association
calculates there are 25 million
pe,sons irn the United States in-
fected ihe tubercle b a c i 1 l u s.
Most ef the 50;000 new active TB
caFes a year come from this group.
The association's interest in other
retniratorv diseases dates from
1955. E'mohysema, a lung disorder
particulardy nrevalent - a m o n g
cigarette smokers and persons in
areas wi'thi heavy air pollution, is
an increasinn_ly serious problem.
Arotmd 19,000 deaths were at
tributed to emphvsr.ma in F.S5, the
mast reeert, year for whinc com-
plete data are availOhli'. Moreover,
the number of death5' ascribed to
emnhvsema has been doubling
everv five vears. Part of the in-
crease ie due to greater awareness
of the disease on the part of phvsi-
cians, but most of it no doubt stems
from vnlnr.tarv or involuntarv in-
halation of lung-damaging fumes.

Christmas Seals Turn 60
This Saturd'ay will mark the 60th
anniversary of Christmas Seals, the
t'taditionali adornment of'~ envelopes
containing holiday greeting cards,
reminds us.
Last year's campaign raised
531.8 million and the Nationali
Tuberculosis Association estimates
the gross this year will be ar.ound
81, million higher. The money wilU
be used to fight both, respiratory
di-eases i tuberculosis, c h r o n i c
bronchitis, ern hvsem Pd two of
th^irmajor causes k,air pollution,
anrli cigarettesl.
There's still a big job to be done
hy your Christmas Seal money.
'I'ubercuibsis is still ( a: f tie r
pneumonia) the second biggest
killer among bacterial diseases; itt
claimed 8,000 American lives last
year. And emphysema, a lung
disorder particularly prevalent
among cigarette smokers an&
persons in areas with heavy air
pollution, is an increasingly serious
problem. Aroun& 19,000 deaths
were attributed to emphysema in
1965 (the last year for which com-
plete records are available) and,
most ominously, the emphysema
death rate has been doubling every
five years.
