The allegation that a higher lung cancer rate in England than the U.S. is due to "the English habit of smoking cigarettes down to a very small butt...i's based on uns~iitable and, therefore, incorrectly interpreted statistical data." The scientists said that "The far reaching contentions made in favor of' the cigarette theory of lung, cancer causation readirather convincingly as long as one either does not know or conveniently neglects to consider critically the indeed large and reliable amount of'evidence that is in disagreement with such concepts offered oftenias facts and proof." i,: While the scientists said it is "quite likely" that cigarette smoking plays a role, "'The voluminous reports on this subject published during, recent years give, n general,, scant consideration to the influences which nontobacco factors may have exerted on the causation andithe rise in freqluency of lung cancer, which, started before cigarette-smoking became generally popular-.":..!- 1~ Tobacco and Health, which summarizes published research relevant to tobacco use and health, includes a speciall report on the recent Eighth International Cancer Congress; also articles on the statistical correlation between marital status and disease, andion emotion and heart diseasie.. Marriage, Divorce and Cancer according,to a new review by Dr. Joseph Berkson, chief medical statistician Statistical correlations show that annual death rates from lung cancer andiheart disease are higher among divorced persons thanthose who are married,n of the Mayo Clinic. The same correlation exists between marital status and most other diseases regardless of sex, he said. Dr. Berkson saidithis shows r the "fallacy" of relying on such, correlations to determine the significance of environmental factors in the causation of disease. Dr. Berkson said "Unless we understand the physical basis of the relation 0 ~ . . . ,;.; - a factor to disease in general,~ it i's hazardous to speculate: about its causal relation to a particular disease.`A Study of U.S. vital statistics indicates "a definite, but complex X'.S. -. Data Links Suicide, Cancer relationship" between death rates from suicide and from cancer, reports Dr. Lawrence LeShan, of the Institute of Applied Biology, of New York City. If'this link does exist, he said, "it-would, at the very least, markedly strengthen the case for the importance of psychological factors in cancer mortality." ; . .,,.., , . ;_ . . ._ .: _ .
