National Conference on Air Pollution met in Washington, D.C., right after to be related to air pollution. Many stories highlighted lung cancer as one of the dfiseases which appeared ,smog episodes in London, Los Ange]:es and New York City had made news l special titled "'The Smoking Qpestion." Senator Moss, a co-sponsor of the Stations of the Mutual Broad'casting,System were using a two-part news .Neuberger Senate Resolution, speaks out strongly against cigarettes and in favor of greater public education efforts. Tobacco Institute President George V. Allen discussed the tobacco and health controversy, the recent directive of the Air Force Surgeon General, the ft.C'.P. report and current concern over teen-age smoking. A separate enclosure has been made of .these transcripts. Other developments included: 1. Mbch~ discussion followed the charge by National Association of Broadcasters President LeRoy Collins that cigarette advertising was designed to influence young people. He also called for corrective amendments in the broadcasting advertising code. . H.E.W. Secretary Anthony Celebrezze commented on smoking and health. • The Tobacco Institute, Inc., publication Tobacco & Health created new press interest in possible psychological factors in lung cancer; other research studies of interest were reported. A Gallup poll report showed national public opinion favoring a 16-year-old minimum age law for the purchase of cigarettes.
