NEWS AND WORLD REPORT ~y 9, 1962 SMOKING AND DEATH: NEW REPORT, NEW STUDY CIfdCA6O-A new study shows that death rates from heart disease, chronic bronchitis, pneumonia, influ- e»ra and other lung diseases were higher in ~ cigarette smokers than in nonsmokers. This was reported recently to the American College of Chest Physicians by Dr. E. Cuyler F$ammond' of the American Cancer Society. Conciusions were based on autopsies of 240 male and two female patients who died at the Veterans Hospital, East Or. "^, N. J. Other studies have linked cigarette smo]cing with lung cancer. The tobacco industry contends, however, that there is no evidence that smoking causes an increase in lung cancer. In this connection, the A;nerican Medical Association announced on June 27 that it is launching a year-long study on the subject.
